How to make hamburger hash
Our hamburger hash is a super easy recipe and only requires a saucepan to cook the potatoes and a pan for the rest of the cooking. That said, it’s as easy to clean up as it is to do!
Boil the potatoes in water until soft, drain and set aside.
Pro tip 1: When you first cook the potatoes, you want them to be tender but not too soft / mushy. It usually takes about 5-7 minutes to cook.

Brown the ground beef.

Fry the onions and potatoes with Italian spices, garlic, salt and pepper in vegetable oil.

Season well to season potatoes and onions evenly.
Cook until potatoes and onions begin to brown.
Pro tip 2: When browning the potatoes and onions, be sure to stir the mixture frequently! This step usually takes about 5 minutes to cook.

Return the ground beef to the pan and stir well.

Add cheese and stir until melted.

Remove from heat and serve hot.
Variations / options / add-ins
- CHEESE: You can use any type of cheese you prefer. I love the whipping of hot cheddar, but you could use mild cheddar instead. I also used mozzarella and it was delicious! Another option for the spice lovers is to use pepper jack cheese.
- VEGETABLES:: A delicious variation on this recipe is to add your favorite vegetables! I like to add mushrooms and peppers with the sauteed onions. Adding canned corn or frozen corn is super tasty too!
frequently asked Questions
Yes! Hamburger hash can easily be made into a CrockPot meal.
To do this, place your browned hamburger and the cooked onion with your uncooked potatoes and spices in the slow cooker. Top with grated cheese and cook on low for 3 hours or until the potatoes are tender.
Hamburger hash is great when served with fried or scrambled eggs for breakfast. It’s also delicious for a quick midweek dinner. For dinner I like to serve this with a crispy vegetable side like these feta and bacon green beans or a refreshing side salad like these wedge salad skewers.
You should store leftover hamburger hash in a sealed food storage container in the refrigerator for 4-5 days. It’s super tasty as leftovers. We usually heat it up and make some fresh eggs for breakfast the second day in a row.
That’s if there’s anything left! It’s so tasty that it is usually devoured on the first day.
